Chitinid

RARE · Singular & Plural: Chitinid / Chitinids · Adjective: Chitinid · Native Language: Checklichick · Origin: Old Midralis
Celestrian Span ★★★☆☆ 80–120 years total; the chrysalis stage complicates Chitinid reckoning — hive culture counts from emergence, not birth. The Conservatory counts from birth regardless.
Prisma Potential ★★★★ Strong, but expressed through geological resonance — Prisma Currents channeled through stone and chitin rather than the air-and-will model surface Prismaturgy assumes. The Conservatory has three open classification disputes. None have been resolved.
Echo Potential ★★★☆☆ Moderate overall with significant caste variation — Resonants score considerably higher than this average. Standard Echo evaluation tools were not designed for beings whose primary sensory register is vibrational and chemical.

“I will tell you what I told the last three survey teams that asked me to characterize the Chitinids: they are not poorly understood. They are understood at the wrong resolution. The Conservatory keeps trying to classify what a Chitinid Prismaturge does in terms of Hue and Current, which is like trying to describe music by measuring the weight of the instrument. I recommend six months in Vorkulth minimum before forming any further academic opinions. I recommend this knowing full well that none of you will go.”

Overview

The Chitinids have been in the Cimmerian Depths since before any surface civilization thought to ask what was down there. Their hive-cities predate Dwarven mining infrastructure, predate the Prismaturge’s Guild’s first subterranean surveys, predate the written history of every surface nation. When the Elemental Cataclysm sheared fault lines through the rock at Year 0 and remade the surface world, it also sheared through the Depths — collapsing hive-cities, isolating communities, destroying in hours what had been built across millennia. The Chitinids rebuilt. They are still rebuilding. They do not particularly advertise either fact.

What makes the Chitinids genuinely strange to surface races, when surface races encounter them at all, is not their appearance, though their appearance is striking. It is the sensory gap. A Chitinid does not experience the world the way any surface race does. Depending on their caste, they feel the world as pressure and tremor, see it in frequencies of light that surface eyes cannot detect, hear it at registers that surface ears register only as absence, or taste it as a continuous chemical narrative that most surface beings are not even aware they are producing. A Chitinid Vespara diplomat reading a room full of nobles is receiving an informational feed about their physiological states, emotional registers, and Spira fluctuations that those nobles cannot perceive, cannot suppress, and are entirely unaware of providing.

Most surface Chitinids are not diplomats. Most are Outcasts — individuals whose chrysalis stage produced a caste assignment that mismatched their hive’s needs or their own social position, who left or were expelled, and who are now navigating a surface world where their particular sensory gifts have no obvious home.

Origin & History

The First Choir — Old Midralis

Before surface civilizations had developed writing, proto-Chitinid larvae were already producing what would become the first chitin-song: the collective vibrational output of a hive expressing itself as architecture. The early hive-cities of Vorkulth and Zorgarok were not built so much as grown — Drudger-caste ancestors reading the stress signatures of the rock and guiding development around fault lines, Cultivar ancestors maintaining the bioluminescent and chemical ecosystems that would sustain a lightless civilization across millennia, Resonants encoding everything into frequencies that the stone itself would hold. Old Midralis Chitinid civilization was not centralized. What existed instead was a network of song — hive-cities that knew each other through the resonant frequencies their architecture produced, capable of sending and receiving encoded information through the living substrate of the Depths across distances that would have been impassable by messenger. The network was not a government. It was closer to a shared nervous system.

The Elemental Cataclysm — Year 0

The Cataclysm did not spare the Depths. When the Elemental Lords were defeated and the surface world was remade, the geological consequences propagated downward. Fault lines that had been stable for millions of years moved. The resonance architecture of the Old Midralis hive-network — built into the stone, dependent on the stone’s stability — experienced catastrophic disruption. Some hive-cities were physically destroyed. Others were sealed: fault-line shifts that closed the passages connecting them to the network, isolating communities that had never needed to be self-sufficient.

The loss was not only structural. Resonants were lost. And Resonants are the archive. Every Resonant who died in the Cataclysm took with them everything they had memorized: histories, technical knowledge, the specific frequencies that identified particular hive-cities in the network, the encoding for the pre-Cataclysm song-architecture. Modern Chitinid civilization has spent four thousand years rebuilding from the surviving fragments. There are hive-songs in current use that terminate mid-phrase because the Resonant who held the continuation was on the wrong side of a fault shift at Year 0 N.A. The empty phrase-endings are not edited out. They are preserved as they are, so that nobody forgets what was lost.

The Surface Encroachment — Current Era

Dwarven mining operations and Concordiax-licensed Prismal excavation have, in the past two centuries, been pushing deeper into the Cimmerian Depths than at any previous point in New Age history. The official position of both institutions is that Levels 1 and 2 (Lurkmere and Vorkulth) are legitimate survey territory. The Chitinids’ official position is that they do not have an official position because they have not been asked. The encounters at the boundary, and there have been encounters, have not been described in any document that either institution has made public. What the encounters have established, internally: Drudger-caste Chitinids are aware of excavation activity through seismic vibration before any surface survey team knows it has been detected. Vespara-caste responses have been diplomatic in form and unambiguous in content. The Concordiax has a sealed file on the subject.

The Four Castes

Chitinid caste is determined at the chrysalis stage. Every larva enters a pre-chrysalis liminal period during which the hive’s Resonants assess its Prismal frequency: the specific signature of its nascent Spira. Based on this reading, a caste assignment is made, and the Cultivar-caste members of the hive prepare a chrysalis environment calibrated to grow the larva into that assignment. The chrysalis is not passive: it is an active biological process that reshapes neurology, sensory apparatus, musculature, and exoskeletal structure over approximately one year. The assignment feels biological because, by the time the chrysalis opens, it is. Resonants are usually right. Not always.

Drudger
The Stone-Readers
Drudger
Dominant Sense: Seismic Vibration & Pressure

The engineering intelligence of Chitinid civilization. Drudgers feel the Depths in ways no other caste and no surface race can replicate — registering stress fractures in stone before they become cracks, sensing the weight distribution of a ceiling from thirty meters below it, detecting movement through rock that would be imperceptible to any instrument the Conservatory currently builds. Physically the heaviest-plated caste, wingless, built for sustained labor and geological navigation. The song register they produce is infrasonic — felt in the chest and bones before it is heard, if heard at all.

Predisposed Expression Earth, Thunder
Vespara
The State-Readers
Vespara
Dominant Sense: Bioluminescent & UV Perception

The diplomatic and military caste, and the caste most frequently encountered on the surface. Vespara see emotional and physiological states off other beings as readable data — Spira fluctuation, temperature change, stress-hormone expression, the specific bioluminescent signature that Chitinid biology produces in different emotional registers. Winged, tall, the most physically imposing caste by surface standards. Their song register is mid-frequency, produced as audible tone. A Vespara diplomat reading a room full of nobles is receiving an informational feed those nobles cannot perceive, cannot suppress, and are entirely unaware of providing.

Predisposed Expression Light, Mind
Resonant
The Archive
Resonant
Dominant Sense: High-Frequency Chitin-Song

The rarest caste; every hive has very few. Resonants are the archive — they memorize the accumulated history of the hive in encoded vibrational form, maintain and extend the song-architecture that constitutes Chitinid cultural infrastructure, and perform the Prismal-frequency readings that determine caste assignment. Their exoskeletons are thinner than other castes, their thoracic resonance chambers enlarged, their antennae the most developed of any caste. Surface races near a Resonant often report a persistent, unlocatable sense of being observed at a level below language. This impression is not incorrect.

Predisposed Expression Thunder, Darkness
Cultivar
The Tasters of the World
Cultivar
Dominant Sense: Chemical & Pheromonal

The farmers, physicians, biological engineers, and chrysalis-preparers of the hive. Cultivars read soil chemistry, fungal health, Prismal saturation in deep-earth organisms, and the health status of every being they are close to through a chemical channel that operates below conscious awareness for most other ancestries. Their song register is chemical as much as acoustic — pheromonal communication operating in parallel with vibrational chitin-song. On the surface, their chemical sensitivity produces a quality of attention to the people around them that is often mistaken for empathy. It is empathy, in the same way that a Vespara reading your physiological state is diplomacy: accurate, practiced, and not entirely separable from the tactical.

Predisposed Expression Nature, Light

The Chrysalis Mismatch — Outcasts

When the chrysalis produces a caste that mismatches the assignment: a Drudger body from a chrysalis prepared for a Vespara, a Resonant frequency in a body grown for a Cultivar: the hive faces a situation its social structure handles poorly. The mismatched individual has the neurology and sensory apparatus of one caste and the social role and training investment of another. The hive’s options are limited: attempt integration, which rarely fully succeeds, or release the individual from hive obligations — which is functionally expulsion even when framed as liberation.

Most surface Chitinids are caste-mismatch Outcasts. Each carries their particular sensory profile, the one the chrysalis grew them into, without the social context that gives it meaning. A mismatch Vespara can read every emotional state in a room full of strangers and has no framework for what to do with that information. A mismatch Drudger feels every structural stress in every building they enter and cannot explain to any architect why the north wall is going to be a problem in thirty years. Each capability is extraordinary. Each is also, without context and community, a form of sensory loneliness that surface races are not equipped to understand.

Chitin-Song — Architecture as Memory

Chitin-song is the collective vibrational output of a Chitinid community: the sum of every resonance produced by every individual and every structure in the hive, organized into a coherent frequency architecture by the Resonant caste. It is simultaneously the hive’s communication medium, its record-keeping system, its architectural planning tool, and its cultural art form. The distinction between these functions does not exist in Chitinid culture because they were never separate.

The walls of a Chitinid hive-city are not decorated. They are encoded. Every surface that has been inhabited for more than a generation carries vibrational memory — frequencies that Resonants have embedded in the stone itself, recoverable by a Resonant who knows the correct reading technique. The oldest sections of the most ancient hive-cities in Zorgarok carry frequency archives so deep and layered that the stone itself has been structurally modified by their accumulation. Pre-Cataclysm hive-cities sealed since Year 0 contain chitin-song archives that no living Resonant can fully decode. The Cataclysm did not erase these frequencies — they are in the stone, and stone does not forget. What was lost was the Resonants who held the interpretive context.

Hive Governance — The Queen Title

Chitinid hives are governed by a council structure built around the four castes, each contributing representation proportional to its population and weighted by role. Resonants hold outsized authority relative to their small numbers because they hold the archive. Cultivars hold outsized authority relative to their perceived social position because they control the chrysalis environment. And therefore, in the most direct possible sense, control what the hive’s future caste distribution looks like.

The Queen is not a biological caste. The title: the closest Diplomata translation of the specific Checklichick frequency-designation it represents — is held by a senior member of either the Resonant or Vespara caste, depending on the hive’s current needs and political balance. The role carries no hereditary component and no biological distinction. A Chitinid who becomes Queen is still the caste they always were. What changes is the social weight their decisions carry.

Physical Features

  • Height varies by caste: Drudgers 4’8”–5’4” (compact, low center of gravity); Vespara 6’0”–6’8” (tall, wingspan adds apparent size); Resonants 5’0”–5’8” (lean, antenna-prominent); Cultivars 5’2”–5’10” (slender, fine-manipulator hands)
  • Exoskeleton: segmented chitin plating in obsidian black, rust amber, opaline white, or deep emerald; Drudger plating is thickest and most matte; Vespara plating has a structural iridescence that shifts in UV light; Resonant plating thin enough that bioluminescent organs are visible through it in some individuals; Cultivar plating fine-grained and chemically reactive
  • Eyes: compound, oversized, multi-faceted; Drudger eyes small and pressure-adapted; Vespara eyes dominate the face, amber-gold or deep violet, bioluminescent at the edges; Resonant eyes pale and highly light-sensitive; Cultivar eyes faceted differently, optimized for chemical-source localization
  • Antennae: present on all castes; Drudger antennae short and vibration-focused; Vespara mid-length and directionally mobile; Resonant antennae the longest and most complex, capable of fine-frequency discrimination; Cultivar medium-length with enlarged chemoreceptor nodes
  • Wings: Vespara only; multiple semi-translucent wing-sets, functional for burst movement and aerial combat; the wing-beat can produce infrasonic pulses
  • Resin glands: present in Cultivar and Drudger castes; exude a quick-hardening biological resin used in construction, wound-sealing, and tool-fabrication
  • Bioluminescence: subtle in Drudger and Resonant; more pronounced in Vespara; Cultivars exhibit the strongest pheromone-triggered bioluminescence, particularly around the thorax

Alignment

Chitinid alignment reflects the caste system’s influence on individual psychology. Collective function is the primary cultural value, not self-sacrifice in the abstract, but the concrete understanding that a hive is a system and individual members are components of it. This produces a general tendency toward lawful orientations among hive-dwelling Chitinids, with significant caste inflection: Drudgers toward lawful neutral, Vespara toward lawful neutral with pragmatic good-adjacent flexibility when it serves hive interests, Resonants toward lawful with a strong neutral axis driven by archival impartiality, Cultivars toward neutral with good tendencies driven by biological care orientation.

Surface Outcasts distribute differently. The act of leaving the hive, whether by expulsion or by choice, is itself a break with the lawful-collective framework that caste society produces. Most surface Chitinids are neutral in alignment because they are in the process of building an individual value system to replace the collective one they no longer have full access to.

Affinity Disposition: Skewed

Chitinid Spiritual Expression distribution reflects their deep-earth origin, biological cultivation culture, and seismic Prismal register. Earth and Nature dominate: the geological and biological substrates of Chitinid life express strongly in their Spira. Darkness is significantly elevated, reflecting millennia of lightless-environment development. Thunder reflects the seismic-resonance dimension of chitin-song and Drudger-caste sensory processing. Light scores higher than the lightless environment might suggest — bioluminescent cultivation produces genuine Light-affinity across the Cultivar and Vespara castes. Wind and Ice are the lowest expressions, consistent with an entirely subterranean race that has essentially no evolutionary or cultural relationship with atmospheric or cold-environment Prismal registers.

The Conservatory’s attempt to classify Chitinid Prisma practitioners using standard Hue categories has produced three separate unresolved disputes and one formal complaint from a Chitinid Vespara diplomat who described the classification process as “measuring the song by weighing the stone.” The Conservatory’s response to the complaint is filed under “pending review.” It has been pending for sixty-two years.

Conflicts & Connections

With the Concordiax

The Concordiax’s relationship with Chitinid civilization is structurally awkward and institutionally unresolved. The Verbum has been offered to Chitinid populations through the standard licensing framework. Chitinid hives have accepted it for some members, primarily Vespara operating in surface diplomatic contexts, and declined it for others, Resonants almost universally. The Concordiax does not have the regulatory infrastructure to compel compliance with populations that live four levels below its administrative reach and whose response to unauthorized excavation has been documented as “definitive.”

With the Dwarves of Kält

The oldest surface-adjacent relationship Chitinid civilization has. The Dwarven clans of Kält whose deep-excavation history put them in contact with Vorkulth-level hives long before the current era have maintained a functional, limited arrangement: Dwarven access to pre-Chitinid passage infrastructure in exchange for non-publication of what they found when their excavations broke into Chitinid-built tunnels. The arrangement has held for approximately 280 years. The current Concordiax excavation push is applying pressure to it from the outside — Concordiax-licensed operations are approaching boundaries that the Dwarven clans have historically kept surface institutions away from.

With Other Depth-Dwellers

The Cimmerian Depths are not exclusively Chitinid territory. Dwarven operations in Lurkmere and Vorkulth, the populations recorded in various Depth levels, and the entities in Throkul’gor constitute a complex subterranean political landscape that Chitinid hives navigate primarily through seismic intelligence and Vespara diplomatic response when detection is insufficient. The hives do not advertise their intelligence capability. Surface institutions consistently underestimate how much Chitinid civilization knows about what is moving through the Depths.

Language Notes

Checklichick (racial language, Old Midralis-origin): A vibrational and chemical communication system that is only partially audible to surface races. The surface-audible component: the click-and-chirp register that gives the language its name in Diplomata transcription — is the simplified register Chitinids use when communicating with beings who cannot receive chemical or infrasonic signal. Full Checklichick operates simultaneously across three channels: acoustic (clicks, chirps, and stridulation), infrasonic (felt through bone conduction at frequencies below standard hearing), and chemical (pheromonal signals carrying emotional register, urgency gradation, and identity markers). Surface-acquired Diplomata fluency gives access to the acoustic channel only.

Chitinid names in Checklichick are frequency-signatures rather than phonemes: the specific vibrational pattern that identifies an individual in the chitin-song architecture of their home hive. Diplomata-context names are phonemic approximations of these signatures, often assigned by the Chitinid themselves for surface use. The approximation is always imprecise. Chitinids who have been on the surface long enough sometimes develop an attachment to their Diplomata name that their original frequency-signature no longer carries, one of several ways in which extended surface contact changes a Chitinid in ways that make reintegration into a hive complicated.
